Imaging After Photography

January 23 - May 09, 2026
Moody Center for the Arts

Concurrent with the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), photography has expanded from a means of capturing the visible world through a specialized analog device to include digital processes that can be electronically generated, synthesized, and modified by anyone with a smartphone. Since the rise of generative AI and the widespread availability of text and image-based algorithms, it has become possible to produce photorealistic images that do not originate in three-dimensional space. Differences between images created through human observation of the world and those that are digitally fabricated have become increasingly difficult to discern. What impact does this seismic shift have on the medium of photography? And what are the implications for both artists and viewers?

Imaging After Photography explores the mercurial nature of images, the evolving dialogue between photographs and reality, and humanity’s ever-changing relationship to technological advancements. Artificial intelligence has introduced perspective-altering conditions, shifting how we see the world and our place within it. The featured works by global contemporary artists offer nuanced vantage points on the history of photography and its intersections with machine learning, asking questions about human perception, technological intervention, and how we mediate the indeterminate spaces between the physical and the imaginary. What is authentic, what is possible, and what are the issues at stake?

Featured artists include Nouf Aljowaysir (b.1993 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; lives in Brooklyn), Refik Anadol (b. 1985 in Istanbul, Turkey; lives in Los Angeles), Gregory Chatonsky (b. 1971 in Paris, France; lives Paris), Sofia Crespo (b. 1991 in Buenos Aires, Argentina; lives in Lisbon, Portugal), Joan Fontcuberta (b. 1955 in Barcelona, Spain; lives in Barcelona), Trevor Paglen (b. 1974 in Camp Springs, Maryland; lives in New York), among others.

The exhibition is curated by Alison Weaver, Suzanne Deal Booth Executive Director, and Noor Alé, Associate Curator. The exhibition design is by world: Alejandro Stein and Frank J Mondragón.
