Repeater is an engaging, colorful site-specific sculpture by Brooklyn-based artist David Scanavino. Playfully skewing the shape of the floor and sending it up the walls to a height of 24 feet, the design of Repeater, made of commonly available industrial tiles, creates pathways that invite people to move in and around the artwork. The immersive sculpture enables viewers to walk into an environment that is both a colorful geometric painting and an institutional architectural space.

To inaugurate the work, the Moody hosted Summer Jam, a day of family programs on Saturday, June 3, 12-6PM, including a set by DJ Flash Gordon Parks, food trucks, and a presentation by David Scanavino. Additionally, Houston’s own Outspoken Bean held a spoken word performance from that includes poets from WIT Meta-Four Houston and Houston V.I.P. Poetry Slam to help welcome the new installation. The Moody also partnered with the non-profit Aurora Picture Show, who hosted an Abstract Animation Film Fest in the Lois Chiles Studio Theater.

The Moody will partner with other community groups in Houston all summer long to conduct performances in and around Repeater.

About the artist: David Scanavino (b. 1978, Denver, Colorado) lives and works in New York City.  A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA in painting, 2001) and the Yale University School of the Arts (MFA in painting, 2003), Scanavino has had numerous group and solo gallery exhibitions over the past dozen years, as well as two recent solo museum exhibitions: Imperial Texture at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, and Reset: Candy Crush at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, MO.  He has recently finished a commission for the Columbus Metropolitan Public Library in Columbus, Ohio.
