One Thing Well: 22 Years of Installation Art
Published by Rice Gallery, distributed by D.A.P. / Distributed Art Publishers.
A chronicle of 72 site-specific installations commissioned by Rice Gallery from 1995 - 2017, featuring stunning photography of works by internationally renowned contemporary artists.
One Thing Well celebrates Rice Gallery and its focused mission. For 22 years, Rice Gallery was the only university gallery in the nation devoted to commissioning site-specific installation art. This handsome hardbound book chronicles 72 installations by artists who responded to the Gallery’s unique architecture—a 40-by-44-foot “white box” with an unusual proscenium wall of glass—with spectacular installations. Featuring works by artists including El Anatsui, Shigeru Ban, Sara Oppenheimer, Tara Donovan, Nicole Eisenman, Karim Rashid, Yayoi Kusama, Sol LeWitt, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Judy Pfaff, among many others.
The volume includes essays by Gallery director and chief curator Kimberly Davenport, curator Joshua Fischer, architect Carlos Jimenez, and Julie Reiss, whose seminal text From Margin to Center: The Spaces of Installation Art (MIT Press, March 2000) was the first book-length study of installation art. With contributions by Nonya Grenader, Dave Hickey, Kelly Klaasmeyer, and Sandra Zalman.
