ArtLab: Mixed-Media Sculptures
Free | Every Saturday in June, 2 - 4 pm
Inspired by the works of artist Kelly Akashi, on view in the summer exhibition Resonant Earth, guests can make mixed-media sculptures at our weekly ArtLab every Saturday in June from 2 - 4 pm! All supplies are provided and the event is free.
In this artmaking drop-in, guests are invited to combine bodily forms (hands, ears, faces) with second-hand jewelry for a unique mixed-media artwork that juxtaposes the pliable medium of clay with objects that have a fixed personal history.
As seen in the exhibition, several of Akashi's hybrid sculptures— "Inheritance," and "Be Me"—are created from a cast of her hand interacting with or wearing heirloom jewelry from the artist's grandmother. By combining different media, organic and human-made forms, as well as signaling different points in time, Akashi is able to play with "longer timescales and different ideas about permanence."
All ages are welcome, children under 12 years old require adult accompaniment during the ArtLab.
