Help us celebrate the opening of new work by the Dutch collective We Make Carpets with music, food, and drinks. Crêpe Paper Carpet  is a site-specific sculptural installation that will be constructed in the Moody’s Central Gallery over a multi-week visit by the artists. Inspired by an earlier trip to Houston and seeing the bright colors and handmade production of piñatas, We Make Carpets will use vibrantly dyed crepe paper for their new “carpet,” so called because of the works’ rectangular shapes and frequently symmetrical intricate designs.

The artists will give a gallery talk at 11:30am followed by a performance by award-winning musical groups Mariachi Los Gallitos and Mixteco Ballet Folklórico at noon. A sonic fusion of trumpets, violins, guitarron (acoustic bass), and vihuela (5 string guitar) accompanied by a female singer, Los Gallitos combine technical skill with theatrical finesse in all their performances. Los Gallitos will be joined by Mixteco Ballet Folklorico, who will perform a dynamic folkloric dance. The result is an exuberant celebration of Mexican traditions and culture through music and dance.

The festivities continue with Alex LaRotta, a resident DJ at Houston’s monthly soul dance party A Fistful of Soul. He also recently started ¡Sabrosa! Soundsystem, an all-vinyl Latin and tropical music night at Axelrad.

Moon Rooster food truck will be on hand serving up stellar tacos, quesadillas, and hot dogs so come hungry! And stay cool with Steel City Pops.
