Join the Moody and the Center for Engaged Research and Learning for the improvised and interactive performance of The Day I Met the Sun.

Conceived by CERCL Fellow Devin T. Mays, this second iteration of the work is performed alongside collaborators Bill Harris, Jordan Knecht, and Veronica Salinas. Inspired and guided by the late musician and teacher Turyiasangitanada (the Sanskrit name adopted by Alice Coltrane), this sonic offering of presence and participation is grounded in the tradition of improvised music and sound.

Originally performed at the MCA Chicago, The Day I Met the Sun is described by Mays as “part poem, part sculpture, part song, in performance.”

The event was free and open to the public.

About the Artist

Devin T. Mays (b. Detroit, MI, 1985) holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Howard University and a Master of Fine Arts from The University of Chicago. Mays’s interdisciplinary practice is an exercise in wandering he often refers to as a practice-in-practice. Through sculpture and installation, sound, performance, and photography, Mays creates poetic gestures of observation and ritual. He currently holds a fellowship with the Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL) and the Visual and Dramatic Art Department at Rice University. Through teaching, artistic practice, and public programming, Mays will dedicate his fellowship to focusing on notions of impermanence. Mays currently lives between Houston, Texas, and Chicago, IL.
